Astronomers have always wanted to get in contact with Extra Terrestrial beings living outside or beyond our planet. It has been debated whether there is a planet with the same conditions which we have on Earth that allows other creatures to live on it. Half of this century scientists have focused on finding the answer to this and most of them have reached the conclusion that ETs do not exist.
But instead of trying to track radio signals from alien civilization, some scientists have come up with the idea of trying to actively reach our galactic neighbors. We could find a way to send messages in the direction of the closest stars. At the annual meeting of The American Association for the Advancement of Science scientist from the SETI institute (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) proposed this idea. Their project is called Active SETI.
The director of SETI’s interstellar message composition, Douglas A. Vakoch, said that letting the aliens know that we want to make contact with them should trigger a response. He believes that this may be the best strategy to make contact with them. People should get rid of their fears and uncertainties and instead see what an amazing experience it would be to get in touch with aliens. After all, we are a bit familiar with them in the movie world.
The director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute, Seth Shostak, believes that we could transmit the content of the internet into the outer space. Such a large amount of texts, videos, sounds and pictures could enable aliens to decipher many things about our society. It would not be a good idea to use a radio transmitter because it will take month to send the web into space. Instead, the plan could be put into practice by using a powerful laser which can transmit bits which resemble optical fiber and so the data can be launched in a few days.
However SETI’s plans were not so well perceived by everyone. The main reason to this was the fact that it is too risky to expose ourselves. Dr. Seth Shostak replied to this by saying that if they were to put their plan in practice it would be as if you were shouting in a jungle without knowing what to expect. That is why many people are afraid.
“If you incite the aliens to efface or destroy the planet, you would not want that on your tombstone, right?”
