Want some ponzu on your food? Have a glass of a mojito… Afraid of a frenemy… You want to chillax but first a selfie please. Ponzu, mojito, frenemy, chillax, selfie… Wandering what are we talking about. Well, these words are new additions to the official Scrabble Players Dictionary.
The National Scrabble Association (NSA) Dictionary Committee and Merriam-Webster is ready with the fifth edition of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, which is due to go on sale on August 11, with around 5000 addition words into it.
The scrabble dictionary, which includes over 100,000 words, has been updated for the first time in over a decade. The last time it was updated was in the year 2005 when publisher Hasbro launched its fourth edition with around 4000 additional words, including two-letter words like ‘QI’ and ‘ZA’.
The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary was first published in the year 1978. It was developed amid need for a word authority for NSA-sanctioned tournaments and clubs.
With the addition of almost 5000 new words, the new edition of the dictionary has expanded the word horizon for the scrabble players.
Daniel, who enjoys Scrabble for two to four hours every day, said, “Being able to hook an ‘e’ underneath ‘t’ means that I can play far more words. Sometimes you play parallel to a word and you’re making two-letter words along the way. I call those the amino acids of Scrabble. The more two-letter words we have, the more possibilities a word will fit.”
Some of the words included in the fifth edition of the dictionary are: Beatbox, Chillax, Frenemy, Hashtag, Mixtape, Selfie and many more.
