Solar power has its pitfalls. A significant amount of energy gets lost as electrons move from solar panel to the battery storing the energy. Researchers at Ohio State University were working on this problem and have now come up with an innovative solution in form of a solar battery.
This battery can capture and store sun’s energy and can thereafter be used for producing valuable electricity. The success has been reported in journal Nature Communications on October 3rd. This hybrid solar battery runs on light and oxygen and electricity is trapped in the same using a chemical reaction.
As the light from sun hits the mesh solar panel, electrons get produced. The battery also has its share of electrons and the same get involved as lithium peroxide gets decomposed in lithium ions and oxygen. While the lithium ions get stored in the battery as lithium metal, the oxygen is released into air.
The researchers point out that this discovery could bring along a revolution in the industry as it is a low cost devise and the technology could bring down the cost by around 25 percent. Wu pointed out that the objective of their study was to use a solar panel to capture the light and store the same by using a cheap battery. With the team getting successful in integrating two devices, the technology can become a hit in the coming days.
Ohio State University is in the process of getting a licence for this technology to percolate the benefits of this technology to common masses.
