UK medicals saved the life of two new born babies by performing a kidney and liver transplant donated by a baby that had died before birth.
A hospital in London, has reached a medical breakthrough for the first time in the United Kingdom. Ending of last year, doctors have successfully performed a transplant with organs form an infant donor to other two newborns.
So far the only country performing infant organ transplants have been, Germany, Australia and the United States.
The organs came from a baby girl who died in the womb, because her brain didn’t receive oxygen. She was born trough an emergency cesarian operation but she was dead. She weighed 6.8 lbs and her body presented signs showing her brain lacked enough oxygen during the period of the pregnancy. After receiving the devastating news that their baby wasn’t going to make it, the parents took the decision of donating her organs to save other lives.
And so it happened. The kidneys of the baby girl were transplanted to another two new borns which are alive thanks to that. The kidneys were given to a baby with renal failure and the liver cells were transfused to another baby in need.
The moment doctors informed the parents who had just lost their baby, that her organs could save the lives of other babies, both of the parents agreed to donate them. There was no need for doctors to insist or try to convince them as parents were fond of the idea that their baby could save another life, declared neonatologist at Imperial College Healthcare, Gaurav Atreja.
Currently, UK doctors are working on changing the system, by trying to find better ways and strategies for attaining more organ donors, as the need is high. Organs from a child are not vital just for other children but can be transplanted on adults as well.
Researchers noted in they journal that new born babies or babies of few months, in need of organs transplant have all the the odds against them, because of the present UK regulations.
Medical scientists are trusting that the neonatal centres from the UK will become more cooperative regarding such a noble cause which could aid the grieving family to surpass the moment easier and they should think about having the potential of giving another person the chance to live.
