Sunday marked the launch of Nvidia’s new mobile supercomputer chip, the Tegra X1, which is believed to be the fastest of its kind. Nvidia’s brand new mobile processor facilitates the performance of a room-sized computer on mobile gadgets, although its main target is the design of self-driven cars.
The Tegra X1 was launched Sunday evening at the annual Consumer Electronics Show by the Silicon Valley chip maker’s CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang. The processor surpasses its predecessor, the Tegra K1, by being two times as powerful, thus being a small supercomputer for smartphones. Huang said the X1 is both very powerful and energy efficient and can supply the same console and PC-like graphics to mobile devices.
At the CES press conference, Huang said: “This little tiny thing here is a mobile super chip. We’re able to run any application that relies on the architecture of Maxwell”.
This means that any game run by any state of the art computer or home console can be adapted to smartphones, tablets and other handheld gizmos.
A generous amount of time of the conference was spent pointing out that the real value and use of the Tegra X1 lies not in mobile devices, but in cars. With the launch of the new processor, Nvidia brings a substantial contribution to the design of auto-piloted cars.
The company’s representatives claimed that the new X1 will help manufacture highly intelligent vehicles that can self-park, increase passenger safety and can recognize sings, images, objects, lanes, among plenty of other things.
To showcase this, Nvidia brought out its new Drive PX hardware platform used for the improvement of intelligent cars. The platform is a supercomputer which runs at 2.3 teraflops and processes the information simultaneously supplied by 12 cameras at 1.3 billion pixels per second, thus creating a 360 view of the car’s surroundings.
Another car platform presented at the CES was the Drive CX, which, in Huang’s words is the “world’s most advanced cockpit” for vehicles. The Drice Cx operates with two Tegra X1 chips, making the navigation more interactive.
”The car of the future is going to become a software-defined car,” according to Huang. To aid the automobile designers make use of the new hardware, Nvidia also provides software and programming tools.
One of Nvidia’s best known partners is Audi. Representatives of the German car company was present at the Las Vegas conference, and drew attention to the importance of graphic computing technology and how relevant it is to the development of future cars.
Apart from the field of automobiles, Nvidia could also make use of its new X1 in robots, although the company representatives have yet to discuss that.
