A rock was discovered inside a Russian mine which contained over 30.000 diamonds. Experts say this rock is considered a very important discovery which may offer significant knowledge about how precious stones such as diamonds take form in natural circumstances.
The rock holds little value as a precious stone because of the fact that the diamonds which can be found on and inside of it are not valuable due to the fact that they are extremely small. Because of this fact, the rock was given to scientists so that they can study it.
This stone was discovered in the Udachnaya pipe, located in Russia just outside the Arctic circle, which is one of the world’s largest diamond mine. Geologist Larry Taylor presented these results at the American Geophysical Union convention.
Larry Taylor said that the diamonds found on the rock are shaped like octahedrons, which is a very interesting fact. He also said that because of the shape of the diamonds it looks like they might have formed all of a sudden instead of a long period of time.
Experts found this stone to be exceptional because of the amount of diamonds it contains. Scientists hope that this ore will hold information regarding the chemical reaction that led to the creation of diamonds on our planet.
According to information currently available about this endeavor, diamond rocks like this take shape from minerals that contain carbon. These minerals are found at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers within the Earth’s crust and exposed to both high pressure and temperature cause these minerals to form diamonds. This process which leads to the creation of diamonds can take from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years.
Magma eruptions within the planet’s mantle bring the diamonds closer to the surface, after this process new rocks are formed, rocks also known as kimberlites and lamproites. Even if the heat from the eruptions destroys most of the material around the diamonds they still survive this process.
Sami Mikhail, a researcher from the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, said that the source of these rock formations might have been under the planet’s surface for a very long period of time.
However, experts are still analyzing this rock and their findings will be published in the Russian Geology journal in January 2015.
