The scientists have recently discovered a strange-looking fish deep in the waters of the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on Earth. The fish was recorded during the exploration of the trehcn’s depths.
Patty Dryer and Jeff Drazen from the University of Hawaii, are the researchers who were in charge of the expedition. They said that the what they’ve discovered could be a new species of snailfish.
Snailfish are known to live in extremely deep waters. Pseudoliparis amblystomopsis is another snailfish species, the one that held the record for deepest-living fish. This snailfish lives at depths of 7703 meters. Such extreme depths are very hard to handle by living creatures because it can impede muscles and nerves, bending proteins out of shape. The intense pressure of the waters at such extreme depths can disrupt the enzymes required for living.
The recently discovered fish was filmed at a depth of 8,143 meters. This species of snailfish looks different than other snailfish, so researchers say that this might not even be a snailfish.
The scientists discovered weird snailfish and told BBC that it’s something they haven’t seen before. The researchers told BBC they think the creature is a snailfish, but one they didn’t know existed before. The scientist who filmed the snailfish in the depths of the Mariana Trench said that the creature looks very fragile and looks like it’s made of wet paper tissue. The fish has a strange-looking snout, like one seen in cartoons.
Many wonder how do these strange fish manage to live in so extreme conditions. The researchers say that the these fish can live in such depths because they have a higher level of a chemical called trimethylamine oxide, which helps protein keep their shape under such intense water pressure. According to previous studies, fish could not hold enough trimethylamine oxide inside their cells in order to survive below 8,200 meters. This means the recently discovered snailfish is a new record holder.
Jamieson said that watching the ghostly fish alive in its natural habitat, interacting with other deep-sea creature was an amazing experience and has learned many things from it.
