The chief executive of Apple, Tim Cook has published and essay on Thursday saying that he is “proud to be gay.” This is perhaps one of the most prominent coming out stories in recent times, especially one coming from one of the world’s most important tech companies.
Tim Cook’s essay in which he comes out as a gay man was published by Bloomberg BusinessWeek.
Tim Cook said in his essay that:
“Let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.”
Cook, 53 has never made any public announcements regarding his sexuality, although he has been in the Apple spotlight for many years now. In his essay, Tim Cook writes that he is a very private person and has tried to keep most of his private life a personal matter, away from the media and the public view. This is one of the reasons he hasn’t made any statements regarding his sexual preference. He continued saying in his essay that Apple is one of the most watched companies in the world and for him the most important thing is the focus on the Apple products not on the employees’ private lives.
Tim Cook has said that he came out to his close ones years ago and it was no secret that he was gay. Cook has alluded in previous discussions on private forums that he had a hard time growing up as a gay man in Alabama. He also said that people must fight for human rights and human dignity.
With his coming out statement, Tim Cook has become one of the most important gay person in the corporate world and joined a very short list of other gay executives who came out as gay publicly. According to a recent study 83% of gay, lesbian and bisexual people keep private aspects of their life, like their sexuality.
Apple is known to fight for human rights and marriage equality and has always encouraged gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people to work for their company.
The chairman of Apple, Arthur D. Levinson said that: “Tim has our wholehearted support and admiration in making this courageous personal statement.”
