Alexander Zakharchenko, a pro-Russian separatist has won the election in eastern Ukraine, the voting organizers have announced on Monday. The vote took place on Sunday and it came after 6 months of separatist rebellion in the eastern part of industrialized Ukraine. The voting also defies the views of the pro-Western authorities from Kiev. Many believed that this will make things worse between the West and Russia, regarding the future of Ukraine.
Alexander Zakharchenko, 38, who acted as the “Donetsk People’s Republic” was a mining electrician before turning into a rebel leader. He received 765,340 votes which represents 79% of the total votes.
Alexander Zakharchenko has won the leadership title which gives him power to act in the Ukraine area Luhansk and the regions of Donetsk.
The European Union, the United Nations and the United States have declared that the rebel vote is illegal and is a violation against Ukraine’s constitution. The recent vote involving Alexander Zakharchenko also violates the cease-fire agreement between the government of Ukraine and the separatists which took place on September 5.
Federica Mogherini, the EU foreign policy chief, said that the bloc will not recognize the vote, adding that the illegal vote is “a new obstacle on the path towards peace in Ukraine.”
The president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko called the voting that took place in the separatist areas “a farce that is being conducted under the threat of tanks and guns.”
The Foreign Ministry of Russia stated on Sunday that it will respect the separatist vote and the winner of the election, Alexander Zakharchenko, as an expression of the southeastern Ukraine’s inhabitants’ opinions.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also declared that, “it is extremely important to take active steps to establish a sustainable dialogue”, referring to the cease-fire agreement between the separatists and the central government of Ukraine signed more than two months ago.
After hearing these statements the EU wants Russia to not take the results of the votes into account.
Berlin said that it’s not possible that the Russian authorities to recognize the election which was held by pro-Russian separatists in the east part of Ukraine.
