Talking to your car and telling it which way to go sounds like a pretty awesome and sci-fi idea. It’s awesome, no longer sci-fi because it has been done, but not very safe. New studies reveal that the voice-activated gadgets for cars can distract the driver and make things worse instead of easing them. The voice-activated car gadgets allow the drivers to do plenty of useful hands-free things like sending text messages, tune the radio and even make a phone call just by using the voice. This sounds pretty helpful in theory because it implies that the driver will stay focused on the road instead of doing all those things manually. New studies reveal that things are not what they seem to be. The voice-activated car gadgets are very complex and they require more concentration from the driver which can lead to losing attention from the road. The new study has been released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in collaboration with the University of Utah.
One of the tested voice-activated car gadgets was Apple’s Siri system which can be used to navigate, text messages, Facebook posting and other tools like the calendar, without looking at the phone or handling it.
The Apple device received a very low grade, actually the worst: 4.14 points. Test drivers ended up crashing into other cars while “talking” to the voice-activated car gadgets.
Another bad grading was given to Chevrolet’s MyLink, 3.7. All the systems were graded on a scale of 1-5, 1 representing no level of distraction level while “communicating” with the voice-activated car systems and 5 being the highest level of danger.
The car systems have been tested by 162 volunteers in three different settings, including a driving simulators, a laboratory and in driving cars. Some of the voice-activated car gadgets were rated more distracting than actually talking on a phone while driving.
