Here is another reason for chocolate lovers to cheers. A new study has found some significant health benefits of dark chocolate particularly walking ability.
According to the study, dark chocolate may prove to be helpful for those who suffer from artery disease. Researchers say several studies in the past have proved the health benefits of dark chocolate. Inclusion of dark chocolate in diet helps in improving artery flexibility. Researchers say these chocolates may also do wonders in treating peripheral artery disease (PAD).
The researchers explain dark chocolate contains polyphenols which are able to ease peripheral artery disease impact.
PAD causes narrowing of the arteries in the legs, arms, stomach and head. This in turns reduces the blood flow, which results in cramping and fatigue. The patients suffer from great pain while walking or running.
For finding the health benefits of dark chocolate, the researchers carried study on 6 women and 14 men aged between 60 and 78. During the study, the researchers found that the participants who consumed dark chocolate increased their capability of walking by an average of over 11percent farther and 15 percent longer.
Researcher Lorenzo Loffredo, MD, of Rome’s Sapienza University, and colleagues said, “PAD patients, with symptoms of intermittent claudication, who were given dark chocolate– but not milk – experienced improved walking autonomy”
The research was mentioned online in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
Loffredo further said, “The dark chocolate benefit is of possible relevance for these patients’ quality of life.”
Dr. Mark Creager, a spokesperson for the American Heart Association, has cautioned against the findings of the study, saying in-depth study is required as the results are preliminary and it is still too early to recommend dark chocolate or polyphenols for cardiovascular health.
