It’s well known that the grapefruit diet has been around for more than 80 years and proved to be one of the most efficient weight loss diets. No wonder the grapefruit diet was nicknamed “the Hollywood diet”. Many film stars are using this diet to burn off some unwanted pounds. Besides having the property of eliminating fat tissue, new study reveals that grapefruit fights diabetes as well.
The new study showing that grapefruit fights diabetes was done at the University of California, in Berkeley. The study suggests drinking grapefruit juice instead of water can stop diabetes from developing in the human body. The new study was done on lab mice and the results were amazing: the mice that were given grapefruit juice to drink gained less weight than the ones given sweetened water. Also, the mice that drank grapefruit juice showed signs of a better metabolism, including lower blood sugar levels. The grapefruit juice also affected the insulin sensitivity of the mice, something very important in protecting against diabetes.
The mice involved in the study showing that grapefruit fights diabetes were divided in six groups. One group was given only water to drink. The grapefruit juice used for the other groups of mice was sweetened with artificial sweeteners because apparently mice do not like grapefruit juice. The water was also sweetened so that it matched the level of saccharin of the grapefruit juice.
Some of the mice were on a diet for 60 days that consisted of 60% fat, others were given a diet of 10% fat for 10 days. All the mice drank similar amounts of water and grapefruit juice and ate the same amounts of food. The results showed that the group of mice that drank grapefruit juice and were fed a high fat diet gained 18% less weight than the group of mice who ate the same high-fat diet but drank normal water. The scientists also found that the mice that drank grapefruit juice had a decrease of 13 to 17% in the blood glucose and insulin levels.
