On Sunday, a CDC official stated in an interview that large number of ill patients is being reported. Mark Pallansch told CNN that they were in the middle of looking into it, but don’t have all answers as of now.
Human Enterovirus 68 is similar to common cold but ones who are affected by it, fall severely ill within hours. Sufferers of asthma are affected worse, and many parents are surprised to see that within few hours of the symptoms, children are placed on ventilator in the ICU. ICU at hospitals around Colorado are being filled up by apparent sufferers.
450 cases were reported at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City last week. Similarly, 70 cases were reported at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Southwest Illinois. Warnings have been issued by St. Louis hospitals about the outbreak of the disease.
Will Cornejo, 13 said that he felt as if he was going to die. He felt that he couldn’t breathe at all. Will had to be placed on oxygen at Denver hospital. Jennifer Cornejo, Will’s mother said that he was completely unconscious, his lips were blue and he had become white like a ghost.
Now, it is being seen how quickly this virus is becoming life-threatening, especially in children having mild asthma. Rapid onset of symptoms is seen, usually in few hours. Antibiotics don’t work and hence, the symptoms can be treated only by keeping their airways open and helping them breathe.
