If you are a teen from the 1990s you remember the first chat rooms ever. The most popular of them all was the internet relay chat, or the IRC rooms. The best part of it all was that you could remain anonymous and talk to whoever you wished without revealing your true identity. The new Facebook chat app is trying to recreate all that.
The new Facebook chat app for iPhone is called Rooms and you don’t have to create an account in order to use it. You only need an email address to login or re-login in case you’ve switched devices. The new Facebook chat app connects its users in an anonymous way and they can chat about whatever they wish, as long as it’s under the Facebook terms and conditions, of course.
The new Facebook chat app called Rooms brings a breath of fresh air to the way we communicate with the others virtually and it’s a welcome change from the Facebook’s usual chat apps. The new Rooms chat apps reminded us of the IRC from the mid 1990s where the users could connect anonymously and talk to other people about all sorts of topics, form music to literature, films, etc.
The IRC was developed in 1988 and it was really innovative for that period. It really paved the road for the modern chat applications like WhatsApp or Yahoo Messenger. Back then you didn’t need to go on a website to connect to the IRC chat rooms. You had to install the “app” on your computer and connect to a server.
To join the new Facebook chat app called Rooms you need to scan a 2D barcode. This barcode can be shared privately or publicly and invite people to join in the chat room. In each chat room there are moderators who will filter the content of discussions and can ban and block any chat member if they do not comply to the Facebook terms and conditions.
The new Facebook chat app for iPhone called Rooms is available to download for free from the App Store. The Android version will be made available in the first part of 2015.
