This week, Time magazine apologized for showing a sobbing little girl on its cover looking up to Trump for a story that alleged that she was separated from her parents after they crossed the border illegally.
The news outlet admitted that the three-year-old girl, Yanela Denise, was never separated from her mom. On Friday, the girl’s father told the media that the family was not separated at the border.
The person who took the photo never claimed such thing either. But Time magazine and other news outlets implied that the crying three-year-old was one of the immigrant kids separated from their parents.
Time added that the girl and her mother are being held in a facility in Texas. The magazine corrected the story, but it did nothing about the error on the cover. One editor said that the cover showing the girl crying uncontrollably while looking at President Trump who is looking down at her represents the “stakes” of separating the families of illegal immigrants.
Girl’s Dad Says She Was Never Separated from Parents
Yanela’s family is from Honduras. A photo of the girl was captured by photographer John Moore. Moor snapped the picture while Border Patrol agents were questioning the girl’s mother on June 12.
After the questioning, the pair was driven to a family detention center. The father said that the girl and her mother were together and “safe.”
Yanela’s picture was used for dozens of fundraising campaigns for separated families on social media. Time used the photo of the agonizing girl and added the ‘Welcome to America’ phrase to it.
The photographer had told the magazine that he doesn’t know her whereabouts after he took the pictures. He said she was taken away but never mentioned separation.
