The conservators discovered in the time capsule five folded newspapers, a medal with the face of George Washington on it, two dozen coins-one dating back to 1655, a silver plaque and the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The conservators said that some of the coins appeared to be corroded, but the other items have been kept in very good conditions. Silver plaque even had fingerprints on it.
The time capsule from 1795 was embedded in a cornerstone inside the Massachusetts Statehouse, when the people started to build it. The time capsule was placed there by the luminaries of the Revolutionary era, important figures like Paul Revere and the governor of Massachusetts at that time, Samuel Adams.
The contents from inside the time capsule were put into a copper box in 1855 and the box was put back into the Statehouse building foundation. The capsule remained there until last year when it was discovered during a water filtration project done inside the building. The conservators said the box was not copper, but actually brass.
The oldest coin found in the time capsule was a Pine Tree Schilling from 1652, of which experts say it was made during a period when the colony did not have a royal authority in order to create their own currency. Conservators said that pine trees were also valued back then because they were used as ship masts.
Michael Comeau, the executive director of the Massachusetts Archives and Commonwealth Museum, said that some of the coins found inside the time capsule have been known to worth more than $75,000 in auction. But he added that because some of the coins are associated with important figures like Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, the price would be much higher.
One of the newspapers folded inside the time capsule from 1795 is a copy of the Boston Evening Traveller, a newspaper that eventually became the modern day Boston Herald.
