A petition has been started by Dr. Drew Ramsey to declare National Kale Day, today, the 2nd of October. Why do we need to celebrate kale, you might ask? Dr. Ramsey answers:
“National Kale Day is a celebration that aims to increase awareness, access, and education about the positive health benefits of eating more kale.”
That makes perfect sense, we think. Dr. Ramsey is the author of the book called “50 Shades of Kale” and has spent many hours finding and styling kale leaves for photo shooting sessions and says that kale is his muse. He said that this cruciferous vegetable is packed with nutrients, economical and very versatile. He also stated that eating more kale could help save the planet.
The use of kale has increased in the last five years and every nutrition expert agrees that kale is one of those wonder foods because it contains so many vitamins and minerals. While many agree with praising kale and give it a national day, others find it a bit too much. Dietitian Mary Hartley says she’s ok with kale but she’s wondering if it really needs a “public relations manager”.
Hartley agrees saying that indeed, kale is a highly nutritional food and it gives us 1,000% of the daily recommended dosage of vitamin K, plus almost 100% of our intake of vitamins C and A, and many other nutrients. Hartley has a problem with kale in the sense that there are other green veggies which deserve more recognition, like cabbage, parsley and other leafy greens. She said that other vegetables are more nutritious than kale, and argues that kale is just a trend at the moment.
Ramsey counterattacked saying that he doesn’t see a point in arguing over a healthy food getting a national day, when there are other unhealthy ones, like pizza, doughnuts, bacon or pie which have been celebrated for years.
Hartley said that she’s not against National Kale Day but she would rather have lentil day.
