Nearly one year into his mandate, President Donald Trump still has doubts about Obama’s birthplace. The New York Times found that the President is still questioning the fact that his predecessor is America born, in “closed-door” meetings.
The Times cited an unidentified Senator as its source. The Senator said he overheard Trump recently casting doubt on Obama’s birth certificate once more. The current Commander-in-Chief seemingly wants to revive the controversial ‘birther’ conspiracy theory, which claims that America’s first African American president was not even born in the U.S.
According to The Times, the President has started a new trip into “the realm of manufactured facts”. Sources told the newspaper that Trump’s staff has been encouraging lawmakers to change the subject of the conversation whenever the theory is popping up.
Trump Questioning Obama’s American Roots for Years
Trump has been claiming that Obama was born in Kenya, not the U.S. for years. If the theory is correct, the Obama presidency was illegitimate. Trump distanced himself from the birther movement towards the end of the presidential campaign.
In September, the Republican conceded that his predecessor was American born and blamed his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for starting the theory when she raced against Obama.
Nevertheless, he never apologized to his predecessor for the years of questioning the legitimacy of his presidency. In 2012, Trump tweeted that an “extremely credible source” had told him the 44th President of the United States was born overseas and that his Hawaii birth certificate was a fraud.
In the wake of the scandal, the White House released Obama’s birth certificate in long and short versions. The documents clearly show that the former President was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. The Obama administration also underlined that there is proof Obama was born in Hawaii in at least two newspapers that used to publicize local births when Obama was born.
