Police arrested two people after an unidentified SUV driver plowed his vehicle onto the top-secret NSA campus. Three people were hurt in the incident, but National Security Agency officials ruled out terrorism.
The FBI believes that the man either made a mistake when he turned onto the restricted exit or he entered full panic mode when he saw he was surrounded by heavily armed police officers.
Until we complete all the interviews, we just can’t say definitively,
an investigator said.
There are many details of the incident that haven’t been clarified, like who fired at the driver through the windshield and how the SUV crashed into a barrier and ended up facing other cars entering the parking lot.
The Driver Was Hospitalized
Police said none of the injured people had gun wounds. The driver was rushed to the hospital too, but his condition was not revealed. In addition, a bystander and a NSA official were harmed in the incident. Those two’s injuries are not serious.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. at one of NSA campus’ security gates. Aerial images showed the black car with bullet holes in the windshield. The FBI acknowledged that “preliminary” gunfire hit the car. The bureau declined to say who opened fire – the NSA or the police.
The FBI also said that there were three passengers in the SUV, but none of them featured as a terrorist in its database. Investigators are now reportedly interviewing passengers and analyzing the vehicle.
An FBI agent said he wants to learn what the three people were doing in the restricted area. It is not the first time a driver erroneously ends up in the NSA campus by taking the wrong exit. Most motorists that make a wrong turn are turned back by the NSA police. It is the first time there was a gun exchange in such incident.
