Keith Avila was working as an Uber driver for only two months when he picked up on some shady conversation between his passengers. After he realized there could be sex trafficking involved, he picked up the phone and alerted the local authorities.
The Uber driver’s tip led to the arrest of two women who were later brought in on pandering and pimping charges. The trip lasted for only 15 minutes. However, during this time, Keith Avila grew suspicious of the two women accompanying an underaged girl which was wearing provocative clothing.
He told the reporters he could hear the women talking in the backseat, giving a set of instruction to the girl sitting next to him. The Uber driver said that the women were teaching the girl how to check her customers for weapons (by hugging them and patting them down) and to ask for payment in the form of “donation” before any services are offered.
By listening in on their conversation, Keith Avila was able to inform the law enforcement officers of the exact location of the crime. According to the Elk Grove department, police officials credited the Uber driver with the tip that led to the perpetrator’s arrest.
Law enforcement officers say that the 16-year-old victim had been reported missing a while back. On Monday, December 26th, police officers arrested 31-year-old Maria Westley and Destiny Tenaya Pettway, 25 years of age. Also, when the officers broke in the hotel room, they also discovered 20-year-old Disney Vang with the underaged girl. He was also detained for engaging in sexual activities with a minor.
While police has launched an investigation into the matter, the 16-year-old victim has been taken to an alternative housing location. At the moment, Westley and Pettway face pimping charges, felony counts of causing a minor to engage in commercial sexual activities, and threatening or encouraging a minor to engage in prostitution.
Both women are scheduled to appear in court for their trial in January 2017. In the meantime, they remain under lock and key at Sacramento County Main Jail. Judge Jaime Roman set the bail at roughly $500,000 each, as the jail records state.
