Disturbing scenes took place Saturday evening in Fort Wayne, Indiana. A man wielding a knife was killed by police officers who had responded to an emergency call, around 8:50 p.m.
The shooting took place in the parking lot of Hallmark Inn, located on Washington Blvd. The place doesn’t have a good reputation, its patrons describing poor conditions and services. The events that just transpired will surely not do well for business.
The man killed by police was only described as a “white adult” and no further information about his identity was provided. However, they did provide a summary of the events.
After arriving at the scene, police have found the man intoxicated, armed with the knife. The emergency call had come after the suspect had reportedly threatened another person with his weapon.
The police offered repeatedly called for the man to drop his knife, but the man would not comply. After several warnings, the man instead chose to approach and attempt to attack the officers. Being in a life-threatening situation, one officer opened fire.
The shot did not instantly kill the suspect. While on the ground, the suspect would still refuse to drop his knife. The police proceeded to kick the knife out of his hand.
After eliminating the immediate danger, the police called for medical units. Until their arrival, officers tried to offer the man whatever first aid they could manage. When paramedics arrived, they continued to try and resuscitate the man, only to pronounce him dead after those attempts failed.
The identities of the officers and the deceased suspect have not yet been released to the public. The police department policy states that all officers involved in the shooting will be placed on a five-day paid administrative leave.
The case will be further investigated by the Indiana State Police.
This is the second man killed by police in Fort Wayne, in less than two days. On Friday, the Fort Wayne SWAT team was required to use lethal force on a 36-year-old man by the name of Joseph C. Schroeder. The man was holding a child hostage inside a house on Stony Run Lane.
During that incident, the SWAT team had negotiated with the man for an estimated six hours. The suspect was also a knife-wielder. When the team believed that the Schroeder was about to harm the child, they were forced to take action, resulting in the man’s death.
