Thousands of cities around the world created an urban alliance to fight against the effects of global warming. The action wants to draw attention to the importance of urban communities in reducing the impact of pollution affecting the environment.
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy is a coalition formed by 7,000 cities over six continents, aiming at curbing climate change.
The association of mayors was an initiative of the European Commission.
The coalition’s agenda includes climate reduction goals, actions, and feedback on their progress.
The mayor of New York actively supports the initiative, being selected as the co-chair of the coalition.
The members of the urban alliance say that cities have proven over time to be not only solution providers, but they can also add a contribution to larger scale objectives that are taken at a state level.
Cities had a major role in helping the United Nations reach sustainable development targets.
More than 400 mayors participated in the December meeting in Paris when the US committed to a 26-28 percent reduction in emissions by 2025.
Earlier this week, the US cities announced a local, national network of cities working together for climate and energy solutions. The group will encourage public-private cooperation to achieve sustainable development goals and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The president of the US urban alliance declared that mayors are interested in creating green infrastructure and implement other environmentally friendly solutions, as they make cities more livable and attractive for their citizens.
As the business sector is also interested in environmentalism, the urban alliance hopes to merge efforts in creating a more sustainable future.
Statistics say that about 80 percent of the world’s wealth resides in urban areas. The officials interpret this as a resource that can be used to create a stronger impact on the environment.
For example, New York has an annual operating budget of over $50 billion. A part of this impressive amount can be used for implementing green solutions in the city.
Another advantage of a city is the access to technology and political and administrative platforms. A city can bargain for the costs of the technology used and can create a local partnership with powerful global companies.
The urban alliance can also help mayors to be more motivated towards innovation. Portland’s mayor already left the first official meeting with the bright new idea to make the city become platinum rated urban space for bikers.
