A patent has been received by Apple from USPTO in which multiple types of smartwatch devices are covered such as modular designs which has built in controls and sensors, smart strap and through which a plug in personal media device can be hosted., just like the iPod Nano. It is all-in-one and resembles the iWatch for which lots of rumors are being heard about.
This new patent is termed the ‘iTime’ and mostly it deals with convertible device in which a central unit is incorporated which one can remove and use it separately from the strap. Features can be added by the strap too, to the central component that includes haptic feedback motors for giving notifications of vibrations, Wi-Fi radios and GPS modules. The look of it is like typical wrist strap. However, data can be wirelessly transferred between the strap and the iPhone or iPad, as per the patent.
Functionality for this media player and smart band combo when it is connected to other devices makes it a very effective smartwatch. However, various physical form factors are described by Apple. It has a completely contained device, the sound of which is like the iWatch which is heard and described in the rumors. Apple also states how incorporation of gesture controls is possible in this device, through which call can be answered by a user, by flicking his wrist.
As per the recent rumors, it has been suggested that the iWatch would be launched either this year end or early the next year. Thus, we don’t have to wait for seeing what Apple would be doing with the smartwatch.
Even though this is an earlier design, this is a sure sign that Apple has been giving a serious thought over smartwatches for years now.
