A Florida woman whom doctors had told that she had 3 months to live was completely cured of breast cancer thanks to an experimental therapy.
Judy Perkins, 52, had tried anything from very aggressive chemotherapy and hormonal therapy to having her lymph nodes removed and a mastectomy. But all the methods failed as cancer managed to get to her liver and chest.
Doctors were absolutely sure that she was going to die. However, she had the chance of meeting a cancer doctor that is specialized in genetic mutations and human immunology. Dr. Steven Rosenberg virtually saved her life.
He proposed a new cancer treatment that trained the woman’s white blood cells into detecting the genetic mutations linked to the breast cancer.
Experimental Therapy Saved the Woman’s Life
Dr. Rosenberg’s team grew the white blood cells in a laboratory and injected the patient with 90 billion cells.
I think it had been maybe 10 days since I’d gotten the cells, and I could already feel that tumor starting to get soft,
the woman said in a CBS interview.
She couldn’t believe that the treatment was having results. Researchers think that the white blood cells are still protecting the woman against cancer two and a half years later. They explained that the cells are alive and still freely circulating in the woman’s body and are part of who she is now.
Perkins agreed to take part in the experiment, knowing that there were some risks. She advised two of her acquittances who had cancer to try the experimental therapy, but both died.
Dr. Rosenberg, who works at the National Institutes of Health, only accepts cancer patients whose tumors are extremely aggressive or are given only a few months to live. He is aware that the treatment needs further tweaking, but he’s confident that it could help cure multiple types of cancer.
