The survey was conducted by the National Health Interview Survey.
The survey shows that the use of yoga among adults has gone up from 5.1% in 2002 to almost 9.5% in 2012.
Also, the use of yoga among adults aged 65 and above has increased from 1.3% to 3.3%.
Tanya C. Clarke from the National Center for Health Statistics and one of the researchers involved in the study, said that yoga was practiced among adults aged 18 to 44, which jumped from 6.3% in 2002 to 11.2% in 2012.
Apart from yoga, the study reveals that Americans are also doing other forms of relaxation techniques like tai chi and qi gong, however, 80% of them choose to practice yoga.
The report was mainly focused on the meditation and movement practices, as well as the non-mineral, non-vitamin and dietary supplements used by Americans in recent years.
The survey did not include other practices such as chiropractic or acupuncture.
Josephine Briggs, director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, explained that health trends usually tend to remain stable among people. Dr. Briggs adds that the recent increase of yoga practice among Americans was quite surprising.
Briggs believed that the increased use of yoga has to do with pain management, especially for treating musculoskeletal pain.
She explains that Americans tend to manage pain using mind and body approaches. Although yoga is not really a complete science, there is proof that patients benefit from it when using to treat various pain conditions.
Also, the study shows that yoga practice has increased among children, from 2.5% in 2007 to 3.1% in 2012.
Although pain management is one of the plausible reasons for the increase in yoga practice, researchers are also speculating on other reasons. They believe that this increase in popularity has to do with the fact that some public schools have begun to introduce yoga as a fitness program.
Another reason for its popularity could be that yoga can be easily practiced at home and is inexpensive.
